Meeting Obi Melifonwu

New England Patriots safety Obi Melifonwu stopped by the optometry. It was his first stop at the office for an eye exam and eyewear.

Obi played his college ball at UConn where he made a name for himself as a senior and received an invite to the 2017 Senior Bowl. He then was selected in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. Obi spent last season with the Patriots and is still riding high from the Super Bowl Llll victory over the Rams.

Obi is a hard working young man who looks to get more playing time with the Patriots in the upcoming season. I want to wish him the best.

Meeting Maurice Hurst Jr.

Oakland Raiders defensive tackle Maurice Hurst Jr. visited the optometry. This was his second visit to the practice as Mo needed to select additional eyewear.

Mo played his college ball at Michigan where he was an All-American and First Team All-Big Ten in 2017. He was projected to be a first round pick in the 2018 NFL draft but was diagnosed with a heart condition before the draft. That issue dropped his stock and Mo eventually was selected in the fifth round by the silver and black.

Mo is an intelligent and nice young man from Massachusetts. I want to wish him the best in the NFL as he will be sacking quarterbacks for many years to come.

Facts about Mo

  • Full name is Maurice Roy Hurst Jr.
  • 2017 First Team All-Big Ten
  • 2017 All-American.

Meeting Greg Zuerlein

Los Angeles Rams All-Pro placekicker Greg Zuerlein visited the optometry. Greg was there for a private meet and greet with patients of the practice.

Greg has worked extremely hard throughout his career and has risen to become a star player, as well as a fan favorite. Not bad for a former sixth round NFL draft pick who attended the University of Nebraska Omaha and Missouri Western State. From two small football schools all the way to kicking in Super Bowl LIII, where Greg recorded the only points in the game for the Rams.

Greg enjoyed the small meet and greet, most of whom were Rams fans. I wish him nothing but success for the rest of his career.

Meeting Ryan Leaf

Former San Diego Chargers quarterback Ryan Leaf stopped by the Optometry Practice. The end of the year visit consisted of an eye exam and eyewear.

Ryan was a standout at Washington State which led to him being selected as the second overall pick in the 1998 NFL draft. He was second only to Peyton Manning. Ryan didn’t live up to the hype as a top draft pick and is considered one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history.

After Football, Ryan’s life got a bit out of control with a substance abuse issue which ultimately led to him serving time in jail. He has since turned his life around and is now helping other individuals battle their own addiction issues. Ryan is currently a Transcend program ambassador, an organization dedicated to helping people live sober lives.

Even though Ryan is one of the biggest busts in NFL history, it was still nice having him at the office and I want to wish him the best with Transcend. You can read more about Ryan’s current organization by clicking on the link below.

Meeting Hunter Henry

Los Angeles Chargers tight end Hunter Henry came by the optometry practice. This was Hunter’s first visit to the office for an eye exam.

Hunter was a stud coming out of the University of Arkansas where he won the prestigious John Mackey Award in 2015 as the nations top tight end. He was drafted in the 2016 NFL draft as a potential future replacement for Antonio Gates. After a few seasons under his belt, the worst happened when Hunter suffered a torn ACL during the spring. More than likely it’s an injury that’s going to sideline him for the rest of this season.

Hunter is keeping his spirits high and is working hard to make a strong comeback. I want to wish Hunter the best on his return to the playing field.
